Hot work

Reviewed:

Hot work is a collective name for work operations that involve heating or sparking and which may risk causing a fire.

This may involve welding, cutting, soldering/brazing or work with high speed rotary tools. Hot Work is found in a variety of industries. Industrial and construction work, agriculture, shipping and crafts to name a few. Those performing Hot Work are called Hot Work operatives. Before Hot Work can be performed, three functions must be manned. A permit issuer is the person who gives the Hot Work operative a written permit to conduct the work. If a permit issuer issues permits regularly, a valid certificate is required. The fire-watcher's task is to monitor so that a fire does not break out. The fire-watcher must also have a valid certificate. Finally there is the Hot Work operative, the person who performs the actual work task. A valid certificate is required to carry out the work.
