If you are going to build or renovate housing for elderly people, you can receive support that covers part of the construction costs. You can also receive support to adapt, for example, entrances, stairwells or laundry rooms in buildings with rental and tenant-owner apartments so that they work better for elderly people who want to continue living there.
Examples of who can apply are public-benefit housing companies, construction companies, private property owners and cooperative building societies. Adaptation measures can also be applied for by tenant owner associations.
The amount of support depends on the number of square metres and the number of residents
How much money a certain building project can receive as support depends on what you will build or adapt:
- For new construction, you can get up to SEK 3,600 per square metre of living area.
- For renovation, you can get up to SEK 3,200 per square metre of living area.
- For adaptation of common spaces in rental apartment buildings or tenant-owner apartment buildings, you can get support for a quarter of the cost, but no more than SEK 200,000.
If the home is intended for one person, you receive support for a maximum of 50 square metres, 15 square metres of which is for common areas. If the home is intended for two people, you receive support for a maximum of 70 square metres, 20 square metres of which is for common areas. You cannot get more support than what the building project costs.
The building project may not have any other government assistance
It is not possible to get support if the building project has already received another government assistance.
The support consists of three different components
The various components of the support for housing for the elderly are:
- new construction or renovation of special forms of housing for the elderly provided pursuant to the Social Services Act
- new construction or renovation of rental apartments for the elderly in the ordinary housing market
- adaptation of common areas in rental or tenant-owner apartment buildings.

Who does what?
County administrative boards
Are responsible for handling and decide on support. An application for support must be sent to the county administrative board in the county where the property is located. The county administrative board also answers questions.
National Board of Housing, Building and Planning
The role of the National Board of Housing, Building and Planning is to write regulations for the support. The county administrative board's decision can be appealed to the National Board of Housing, Building and Planning.
The Government sets conditions for the support in an ordinance.
