The overarching objective for Swedish governmental work at national and international level is to promote sustainable development. Another target is to contribute to harmonization activities aiming at the establishment of a well functioning Common Global and European market and protection for citizens.

Boverket at the EU level
Appointed experts at Boverket act on behalf of Sweden in five Committees on EC directives in the construction sector and Boverket has the overall responsibility for implementation measures. All actions in the Committees are made in collaboration with and on instruction from the Government, primarily the Ministry of Environment.
The Lifts directive (95/16/EC) and the Cableway installations directive (2000/9/EC)
Jaan Karsna, Boverket is member of the Standing Committee on Lifts and the Standing Committee on Cableway installations and participates in European and Global administrative cooperation in the areas.

The Construction products directive (89/106/EEC, CPD)
Boverket is responsible for implementation measures as well as information and market surveillance activities concerning construction products and the ongoing harmonization work in the construction products area in Sweden. The activities include implementation in Swedish "Building Regulations" and "Design regulations" and publication of harmonized technical specifications on construction products (Current issue BFS 2008:9 "TEK 11", not available in English). Head of the Swedish delegation to the Standing Committee on Construction and its Preparatory group is AnnMargret Kindlund and the deputy delegate in SCC is Annika Wessel and in the Preparatory Group the deputy delegate is Anders Sjelvgren.

Other EU activities
Boverket participates in EU activities also outside the directives. Of particular interest are sustainability issues. The Commission has set up an expert group, which has elaborated a mandate to CEN (European standardization) for a common framework for "Environmental performance of buildings declarations", EPDs.

Standardization activities
Boverket´s active participation in standardization work is limited at ISO, CEN and even at national level. The selected activities are considered very important for the maintenance of Swedish regulations in the area.

European Construction Network, ECN
As a rule the current EU chair country hosts an unofficial meeting activity. This meeting constitutes an informal discussion field between EU/EEA countries, the Commission and Industry, where various construction sector issues inside and outside EC directives are discussed.

Nordic cooperation
Administrative cooperation between Sweden and other Nordic countries has a long tradition and is performed by Boverket formally and informally in various constellations.
Nordic construction authorities meet once a year to discuss questions of common interest.

Baltic cooperation
On behalf of the Nordic Council, cooperation has been initiated in order to simplify trade between some EU countries around the Baltic Sea (the Nordic countries, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland). Certain issues have been chosen for this initiative:
- to compile and compare building regulations in the region in order to examine the possibilities to get a more common regulatory environment
- to spread good examples
- to develop means to evaluate competence demands in the different countries
- to establish network for research and development.
